The Pavilion

The Pavilion at Lords Park is one of the most valued historical landmarks in Elgin and was constructed in 1898. It is located within the beautiful 108-acre historic Lords Park, which is one of the city’s most prized and photographed sites.

The building has a unique history, having served as a hay storage facility in its early days and then housing the city dog pound. It is now known for its natural history collection and fun family-centered activities.

The museum is a favorite for tourists and locals alike. It offers exhibits on Mazon Creek fossils, Native American lifeways, Ice Age mammals, the Fox River ecosystem, and the La Salle Expedition. It also has a Discovery Room that focuses on children. The zoo is also inside the park and features a farm zoo, a herd of bison, and other animals.

The Elgin Public Museum of Natural History and Anthropology

Located in the heart of Elgin’s Historic District, this beautiful Neo-Classic structure was built expressly as a museum in 1907 and still serves that purpose. It is a great destination for learning and appreciating the natural world as well as other cultures, both past and present.

The museum is set within a large park that offers playgrounds, an aquatic center, lagoons, a farm zoo, and other amenities. New exhibits are added at least once a year.

There are also a number of special programs for schools, scouts, and family programming. The exhibits include bird mounts, Native American artifacts, and much more.

Until May of 2022, you’ll be treated to a trip through the history of Elgin at this cupola-topped building in the city’s oldest neighborhood. The Nancy Kimball Cobblestone House, one of six remaining in the city, was saved from destruction by a local grassroots effort.  Visit another area in town here.

Festival Park

Festival Park is a great place to spend some time with your family. It offers a playground and splash pad, so you can take the kids out for some fun and enjoy the summer weather.

This 108-acre park features the Lords Park Zoo, the Elgin Public Museum, and the Lords Park Aquatic Center. It also has playgrounds and picnic areas.

It is also home to the Gail Borden Public Library. It is a fantastic destination for kids and adults alike to read, relax or just have some fun.

Besides the Library, there are lots of other attractions that you can explore in Elgin. You can get your tickets to the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, brush elbows with stars at the Hemmens Cultural Center, or experience living history at the Fox River Trolley Museum.

You can also go for a hike or bike ride along the Fox River Trail, which runs 35 miles through the city. It’s a scenic path that has plenty of fishing spots, boat launches, and picnic areas to enjoy.

Little League Baseball

First established in 1892, this 108-acre park is home to the area’s largest zoo, a high-end public museum, and an aquatic center. The most interesting aspect of Lords Park is its array of recreational options. In addition to the aforementioned ol’ fashioned tennis courts, Elgin is also home to two of the nation’s most popular public golf courses and two state-of-the-art aquatic centers.

The best part about the entire package is that it’s all free and open to the public. This is the city’s crown jewel and should not be overlooked! During the summer months, when the weather is on the warmer side, you might just spot a ballgame or two. The park is located in the heart of downtown on the south side of the Elgin River and is easily accessible by car, bus, or rail. The best time to visit is early in the day when the sun is high and the temperatures are warm. The main drawback is that the park can get crowded during the more popular times of the day.
